General Questions

What happens if I exceed the max number of entries or storage?

Once you reach either 10 entries or 1GB of storage, you will no longer be able to upload new scans or annotations.

We are currently phasing in paid tiers for different user needs. In the meantime, if you'd like to keep adding more to the archive, email us at support@thingsplustime.net and we can arrange something for your needs.

What does "Alpha site " mean?

An Alpha site is an early-release version of a website. New features are being tested or are incomplete and user feedback is collected to guide fixes and improvements before a wider release.

What do I do if I'm having trouble using the site?

While navigating the site you may encounter glitches or incomplete features because the Things + Time platform is still actively in development. We have new features and pages that are still being implemented.

The Getting Started section below and How to Use Things + Time can help with the basics of uploading a 3D scan and creating an entry.

If you are still having trouble, we are continuing to improve user experience, accessibility, mobile support and search functions. Many features are fixed with each update, so please try again in a few weeks.

If you need help now, email us at support@thingsplustime.net and we will do our best to help. We are a small, part-time team, but are committed to creating a platform that works well for everyone. Thank you for your patience!

What to do when I encounter a bug on the site?

Over the next few months, we will be ironing out many of the problems. As one of the early contributors to our project, detailing what happened on the Report a Bug or Send Feedback page helps us identify what needs to be improved or fixed.

I emailed support but haven't heard back, how long will a reply take?

We are a small, part-time team building this platform. We aim to respond to emails within one week. However, if you haven't heard back from us, please resend with the "URGENT " in the subject line. We appreciate your patience!

Licensing and Copyright

What is copyright?

Copyright is a legal protection granted to creators of original works, such as books, music, films, and artwork.

Copyright protection is automatic. This means a work is protected the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form, such as being written, recorded, or saved digitally.

Copyright gives the creator exclusive rights to a work to use, distribute, and reproduce their work.

If I own a physical object do I own the copyright?

If you created the physical object, then yes. If someone else (a person, corporation, organization) created this object, they own the copyright.

Do I own the copyright if I scanned multiple objects grouped together as one 3D scan?

A collection of items combined into one scan can be considered a creative work and you can apply whichever license you see fit. Think of it like a still life painting or photograph. Individually these objects may have their own license or copyright but together they are a new composition and this composition could be considered a new creative work.

What are Creative Commons Licenses?

Creative Commons licenses are a way for creators to share their original work with others, while clearly communicating how their work may be used.

Creative Commons licenses offer creators a standardized, legally-sound way to grant permission in advance so that they don't need to negotiate individual permissions every time

This enables access to knowledge by offering a "some rights reserved " option for content that would otherwise be closed off.

Help! I don't know which license to pick.

If you created an original 3D scan, you can retain your copyright and not grant any permissions for others use your 3D scan.

If you'd like to share your work there are three Creative Commons licenses listed to select from.

If you're unsure, you can select something with more control and adjust later.

The object I want to scan is already in the public domain, can I apply a new copyright license?

No, public domain records cannot be copyrighted and once something is in the public domain it remains in the public domain. If you are scanning something already within the public domain we recommend choosing that option for your license.

Can someone download my 3D scan and modify it as much as they like?

This depends on the license you choose. There are multiple options with varying flexibility.

If I apply a creative commons license that allows re-mixing, can I change my mind to a more restrictive license later?

This one is complicated! Technically yes and no. If you want to change a license you can but if someone already remixed your item before the new license was applied there is no copyright infringement. It is also difficult to prove when a license was changed so we recommend choosing the license you're most comfortable at the start keeping this in mind.

Security and Privacy

How do I delete an entry?

How can I control which entries are viewable by the public?

You can control which entries are viewable by the public when you are uploading a 3D scan, or editing an existing entry.

Click the tab "4. Licensing ", then, under the "Visibility " field you can choose to make your entry Public or Draft/Private.
